A Game-Changer for Utility Design
Washington, PA – Feb. 7, 2024 — GeoSpatial Innovations, Inc. (GSI), a leading private software company specializing in engineering solutions for electric and natural gas distribution companies across North America, proudly announces the successful deployment of its cutting-edge Distribution Design Studio (DDS) at FirstEnergy. The DDS solution at FirstEnergy represents a significant leap forward in utility design and engineering.
Headquartered in Akron, Ohio, FirstEnergy serves over 6 million customers in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions. FirstEnergy’s 10 regulated distribution companies collectively form one of the nation’s largest investor-owned electric systems.
A multi-year modernization project completed in 2023 replaced legacy technologies with new innovative solutions, including GSI’s DDS.
“Since we were replacing our Geographic Information System (GIS) and adding an Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS), we recognized early on that we would need a more robust design program moving forward to feed the correct data to those systems,” explained Jamie Chipps, manager of applications support for distribution at FirstEnergy. “Everything starts with the designer; we can’t ensure network reliance without providing advanced applications and tools for designers to use.”
The DDS solution at FirstEnergy, used for office and field design, includes integrations with Esri’s ArcGIS Utility Network, the largest deployment in the world to date, and FirstEnergy’s Work Management System, CREWS. This robust integration ensures streamlined workflows and accurate data exchange, empowering utility designers to work efficiently. In addition, DDS provides comprehensive structural and electrical engineering analysis capabilities so designers can confidently create solutions that meet the highest standards of safety and reliability.
Lisa Livingood, CEO & President of GSI, expressed her enthusiasm for this strategic partnership: “FirstEnergy’s decision to integrate with our solution is a testament to their commitment to excellence. By enabling Distribution Designers to complete high-quality electrical designs, we contribute to the reliability of their network, ensuring that the lights stay on for their valued customers.”
GSI’s commitment to excellence in utility design positions them as a trusted partner for companies like FirstEnergy. As the industry evolves, DDS remains at the forefront, empowering designers to shape the future of energy distribution.
